Goiás is among the states that suffered the least decline in GDP.
Research conducted by the Tendências Consultoria Integrada institute, published by the newspaper O Globo, shows that 12 Brazilian states plus the Federal District have regressed to their 2010 GDP levels due to the recession caused by the national economic crisis in the last two years; Goiás and the states of the Central Brazil Consortium, with the exception of the Federal District, are outside this group, as they suffered less impact in relation to the decline in their GDPs; positive numbers in relation to the country are a result of the fiscal adjustment practiced in Goiás since the end of 2014, when Governor Marconi Perillo anticipated the approaching national economic crisis and streamlined the administrative machine by eliminating six secretariats and reducing more than five thousand commissioned positions.
Goiás 247 - Research conducted by the Tendências Consultoria Integrada institute, published by the newspaper O Globo, shows that 12 Brazilian states plus the Federal District have regressed to their 2010 GDP levels due to the recession caused by the national economic crisis over the last two years. The largest declines were recorded in the four states of the Southeast Region (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais), Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, Amazonas, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia, in addition to the Federal District.ito Federal.
Goiás and the states of the Central Brazil Consortium, with the exception of the Federal District, are excluded from this group, as they suffered less impact in relation to the decline in their GDPs. The Consortium, chaired by Governor Marconi Perillo, brings together the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Rondônia, the Federal District, and Maranhão (which participates as an associate member). As economist Adriano Pitoli, from Tendências, pointed out to the newspaper O Globo, all 27 states of the Federation experienced a decline in GDP.
The research shows the variation in this decline in each of the states in the years 2015 and 2016. Goiás is among those that presented the lowest rate of variation between 2015 and 2016: -1%. Espírito Santo is among those that show the highest rate of decline in GDP: -8,1%.
The institute observed data relating to each state regarding total GDP, agribusiness GDP, industrial production, and retail sales. With respect to Goiás, the forecast is that in 2017 the state will present higher rates than the country in total GDP (0,9% versus 0,7%), agribusiness (5,7% versus 3,1%), and retail sales (0,4% versus 0,3%).
The positive figures in relation to the country are a result of the fiscal adjustment practiced in Goiás since the end of 2014, when Governor Marconi Perillo anticipated the approaching national economic crisis and streamlined the administrative machine by eliminating six secretariats and reducing more than five thousand commissioned positions.
This year, through the Austerity Program for Growth in the State of Goiás, the state government reduced another 1.300 appointed positions. The program also includes an increase in the pension contribution of state public servants in the Executive branch and other branches; the creation of the Fiscal Stabilization Fund (FEF), with a single and uniform rate of 15%; and a ban on new Tax Regularization programs for 10 years, starting January 1, 2017.
The Tendências study also presents GDP projections for the five regions in 2017. The Central-West Region ranks third, with an estimated 1,4%. The North and Northeast regions are in first and second place, respectively, with 2,9% and 2%. The Southeast Region is in fourth place with 0,5%, and the South Region is in fifth with 0,4%.
