SP 247 - Prevented by the courts from participating in radio and television debates, the PSOL candidate for Mayor of São Paulo, Luiza Erundina, is calling for a demonstration on social media this Monday evening (22) in front of the TV Bandeirantes studio, in Morumbi, where the first debate between the candidates will take place. The demonstration is scheduled to take place from 19:30 pm to 21:30 pm, before the broadcast of the debate, scheduled for 22:30 pm.
The law allows only candidates affiliated with a political party with more than nine members of parliament in the Chamber of Deputies to participate in debates, provided that at least two-thirds of the other opponents agree to the inclusion of someone not covered by the minimum requirement.
"The anti-democratic decision to prevent PSOL from participating in the electoral debates is an affront to the struggles of the people and the free circulation of ideas. Silencing a former mayor who is in third place in the polls demonstrates that Marta [Suplicy (PMDB)], [João] Dória [PSDB], [Major] Olímpio [Solidariedade] and their parties are enemies of democracy and do not deserve to govern São Paulo," Erundina stated on Facebook.
The three opponents mentioned by the candidate were those who disagreed with the former mayor's participation in the debates.
The PSDB candidate for mayor of São Paulo, João Doria, stated earlier, through his press office, that he supports the presence of all candidates in debates, "without exception," and the applicability of the electoral rule "regardless of their positions in opinion polls."
The current mayor of the capital and candidate for re-election, Fernando Haddad (PT), reiterated his support on Saturday for Erundina's participation in all debates. On the same day, at an open-air market in Cidade Tiradentes, in the eastern zone, Celso Russomanno (PRB) stated that he is considering not participating in the debate in support of his opponent.
Andrea Matarazzo (PSD), candidate for vice-mayor on Marta Suplicy's (PMDB) ticket, says that Erundina's absence does not interfere "either positively or negatively" with Marta's performance.
