The Warriors remain strong in the Brasileirão. In the match that marked Fred's return, Fluminense had little difficulty defeating Goiás 2-0 this Sunday at the Maracanã, in the 13th round of Série A.
With this result, Tricolor reached 25 points, taking second place in the competition. Esmeraldino remained with 20 points, but dropped to eighth place.
Looking to preserve his number 9, who is still working on his physical conditioning, Cristóvão Borges kept the same team that defeated Atlético/PR last weekend, and the strategy started to pay off after nine minutes when Dario Conca made a beautiful play down the right and set up Cícero, who had no trouble putting the ball into the back of the net, opening the scoring for the Laranjeiras team.
Trailing, Goiás, which had adopted a defensive tactic, pushed forward more and almost equalized in the 17th minute. After a mistake by Gum, Lima unleashed a powerful shot from the left, forcing Diego Cavalieri to parry it for a corner.
Two minutes later, however, it was Pedro Henrique's turn to falter and lose the ball to Rafael Sóbis, who launched Wágner on the left. The number 10 immediately passed to Conca, but David, in his eagerness to prevent the Argentine from scoring, scored an own goal.
Upon returning from halftime, Fluminense sought to manage their 2-0 lead and allowed the Cerrado team to get closer to their area, without, however, posing any real threat to Cavalieri.
Seeing that the game was practically decided, Cristóvão decided to cheer up the more than 40 people in attendance and substituted Sóbis for Fred. Even though he was clearly out of rhythm, the center forward sought the ball and, at 35 minutes, risked a shot that deflected off the defense, going wide to Renan's left.
Next Saturday, Fluminense returns to the Maracanã to face Coritiba, starting at 21 pm (Brasilia time). Before that, however, they will go to the Arena das Dunas in Natal on Wednesday at 22 pm (Brasilia time) for the first leg of the third round against América/RN. Also on Saturday, but at 18:30 pm (Brasilia time), Goiás seeks redemption at the Arena Fonte Nova, facing Bahia.
With this result, Tricolor reached 25 points, taking second place in the competition. Esmeraldino remained with 20 points, but dropped to eighth place.
