Flamengo is the three-time champion of the Copa do Brasil.
The Rio de Janeiro team defeated Atlético-PR 2-0 at the Maracanã, with goals from Elias and Hernane, the league's top scorer; Flamengo secured a spot in next year's Copa Libertadores.
RJ 24 hours - On Wednesday night, the Maracanã returned to being the "old Maraca." A celebration like none seen in a long time, but one worthy of the nearly 70 Flamengo fans who packed the stadium to witness the first title after the renovation, and Flamengo's third in the Copa do Brasil. A happier ending was impossible, with two goals in the last eight minutes of the game, and, of course, bearing the mark of the new arena's top scorer, Hernane.
Showing they weren't intimidated by the packed stadium, Atlético-PR went on the attack against Flamengo right from the start, making it clear why they're having an excellent campaign in the Brazilian Championship and reached the final of the Copa do Brasil. With high pressing, the Paraná team tried to stifle Flamengo's build-up play. But it didn't last long. That's when the best player on the field started to shine. Just six minutes in, Luiz Antônio almost opened the scoring, but goalkeeper Weverton was forced to make a great save.
The play further energized the fans, who began to push the team forward. Atlético-PR responded, mainly through striker Marcelo Cirino, who moved well and gave the Flamengo defense trouble. For Flamengo, Hernane, heavily marked, could do little. But, in a foul he won in the 41st minute, Flamengo almost opened the scoring. With a perfect free-kick, Luiz Antônio hit the crossbar.
Without any changes, both teams returned for the second half looking to attack. Without success, both coaches were forced to make substitutions, with Vágner Mancini taking off midfielder Felipe and bringing on Dellatorre, while Jayme de Almeida replaced Carlos Eduardo with Diego Silva. Hernane's first shot on goal only came in the 20th minute, after receiving a great pass from Elias, again forcing the Atlético-PR goalkeeper to make a great save.
After that, the match started to get tense, but Hernane and Elias would be the ones to send the fans into ecstasy. In the 42nd minute, the Paraná goalkeeper again prevented Brocador's goal, but the ball ended up falling to Paulinho, who made a beautiful dribble inside the area and crossed it back. Elias, well positioned, shot first time and hit the back of the net to open the scoring.
The crowd erupted, but there was still more. The goal from the top scorer of the New Maracanã was inevitable. In the 49th minute, Hernane received the ball in the box and this time the goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent the eighth goal from the Copa do Brasil top scorer. It may not have been exactly the title-winning goal, but it certainly served to crown the first title won by a club in the stadium after its renovation and to definitively write Hernane's name in the hall of fame of top scorers at the World's Greatest Stadium.
