Increased enforcement boosted revenue.

With the increased tax enforcement carried out by mobile teams in the North, South, Agreste regions and in Maceió, the Alagoas State Finance Secretariat (Sefaz/AL) managed to increase the collection of the Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) by R$ 15 million in 2016; this amount is the result of more than 4 inspections of transport vehicles on federal and state highways; part of the increase in revenue is due to the expansion of enforcement work focused on the dairy chain.

By Sâmia Laços/Alagoas Agency - With the intensification of routine tax inspection work carried out by mobile teams operating in the North, South, Agreste and Capital regions, the State Finance Secretariat of Alagoas (Sefaz/AL) managed to increase the collection of the Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services, the ICMS, by R$ 15 million in 2016.

The amount obtained is the result of more than 4 inspections carried out throughout the year on vehicles transporting goods on federal and state highways throughout the state of Alagoas and in border regions with the states of Pernambuco, Bahia and Sergipe, totaling more than 700 fines for tax irregularities.

According to a survey conducted by the teams, the types of goods most frequently involved in fines include food products, various beverages, construction materials, and bottles of mineral water, which generally arrive in Alagoas without tax documentation or with unreliable information regarding the nature or quantity of the products being transported.

Dairy chain

A significant portion of the increase in revenue is also due to the expansion of inspection efforts focused on the dairy supply chain to ensure that the tax is collected regularly on bulk milk shipments to other states.

The operation involved door-to-door visits to dairy farmers in Alagoas and companies in the sector to identify irregularities in tax collection, and was reinforced with assistance on highways and at tax checkpoints to also monitor the transportation of raw materials.

The result of the work was an increase of more than R$ 7 million in ICMS (Value Added Tax) revenue from interstate milk sales compared to the same period in 2014, when tax collection did not exceed R$ 3 million.

"In 2016, we collected over R$ 10 million in ICMS (Value Added Tax) from the milk sector, a reflection of the monitoring initiated in 2015 to correct specific irregularities related to tax collection. This represents a 200% increase compared to 2014," highlighted the Secretary of State Revenue, Fabrício Santos.
