Alagoas247 - The Extra hypermarket, located on Avenida Fernandes Lima, in the Farol neighborhood, in Maceió, was closed down this Monday morning (06), during an operation carried out by teams from the Municipal Secretariat for Environmental Protection (Sempma). According to the press office of the municipal body, the establishment was committing an environmental crime and had been in an irregular situation since 2010.

In the operation, planned since last week, inspectors found that the hypermarket was discharging sewage into rainwater in a Permanent Protection Area (APP) located behind the premises. The crime had already been detected in other inspections by Sempma, but even after being notified, the establishment did not resolve the situation.

According to the press office of Sempma, Extra's mandatory environmental license had expired in 2010. The concession had not been renewed precisely because of the sewage treatment plant that was discharging effluents, and the problem had already been detected.

The closure will be for an indefinite period, according to Sempma, and is conditional upon the hypermarket regularizing its situation. Inspection teams remained at the establishment this morning until all customers and employees had vacated the premises.

The environmental agency's operation included members of the department's board, the inspection coordination team, and approximately 10 inspectors. The target on Monday was solely the Extra hypermarket. Representatives of the company declined to speak to the press.
