Reuters Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will be out of action for about six months while her left hand, injured in a knife attack, regains strength, the surgeon who operated on the left-handed athlete said on Wednesday.
Kvitova suffered the injury on Tuesday when confronting an intruder who broke into her apartment in the Czech Republic.
"When we talk about (competition) pressure on the hand, we're talking about a period of around six months," said doctor Radek Kebrle in a televised press conference.
"She is a young, healthy athlete... but even so, it's a relatively serious injury," he said, adding that all the fingers on Kvitova's left hand were injured, as she held the attacker's knife.
The tennis player's advisor, Karel Tejkal, said earlier that the four-hour surgery was successful and that she was feeling well.
