Born in Petrolina (PE), the former minister was mayor of his hometown for three terms, from 1993 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2007. He was a state and federal deputy, Secretary of Economic Development of Pernambuco, and president of the Suape Industrial Port Complex.
On October 18th, the president of the PSB and governor of Pernambuco, Eduardo Campos, informed the president that the party would relinquish its positions. The decision was made after a meeting of the party's National Executive Committee, which stated that its departure from the government would not imply its departure from the allied base in the National Congress.
Besides the Ministry of Integration, another ministry headed by the PSB party is the National Secretariat of Ports, whose minister is Leônidas Cristino. He, however, has not yet submitted his resignation. Both ministers have been in the government since the beginning of President Dilma's term in January 2011.
