Falcão says Campos' candidacy is legitimate.

The national president of the PT (Workers' Party), Rui Falcão, says it is still too early to assess the impact of the union between the governor of Pernambuco and presidential candidate for the PSB (Brazilian Socialist Party), Eduardo Campos, and former senator Marina Silva (Rede). In an interview with Folha de São Paulo, Falcão said he considers Campos' candidacy legitimate given the growth of the PSB and that the PT has not made any move to influence the PSB's departure or continued membership in the government coalition. "I think it would be very presumptuous of us to want to prevent him from following the path he intends to follow," he said.

PE247 - The national president of the PT (Workers' Party), Rui Falcão, says it is still too early to assess the real impact of the union between the governor of Pernambuco and presidential candidate for the PSB (Brazilian Socialist Party), Eduardo Campos, with former senator Marina Silva (Rede). In an interview with the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, Falcão said he considers Campos' candidacy legitimate given the growth of the PSB and that, from the moment the governor understood that it would be valid to launch himself as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in 2014, the PT did not make any move to influence this decision. "I think it would be very presumptuous of us to want to prevent him from following the path he intends to follow," he said.

Below are excerpts from the interview where Rui Falcão assesses the PSB's pre-candidacy and see... here the complete matter.

What will happen with the alliance between Eduardo Campos and Marina Silva?
It's too early to assess. There are contradictions that need to be resolved. For example, the former senator's assessment that Governor Eduardo Campos was from the old politics and received a boost of newness with the Rede party joining the PSB. Also, her statement that 'it's better to lose while winning than to win while losing' gave me the impression that she sees the electoral process as a kind of positioning exercise.

What could the PT have done to prevent the PSB from breaking away from the alliance at the national level?
I consider Governor Eduardo Campos's candidacy legitimate. He supported President Lula and President Dilma. The PSB was part of our governments, contributing significantly to what we accomplished. It also benefited from this and grew thanks to these alliances in the states and within its parliamentary groups. And a moment came when he must have assessed that it was important to pursue his own path. We made no move to prevent him from following this path. But we also didn't force him to make this decision.

But could there have been a negotiation?
But he didn't make that proposal. Since he had already been outlining this path, he said he would make a final decision in March of next year. I think it would be very presumptuous of us to try to prevent him from following the path he intends to follow.
