Former president of the PT do B party in Estância resigns: "I was a victim of the Amorim family"

José Edinaldo da Silva resigned last week following a change in the leadership of the party's state executive committee (Clóvis Silveira left, Paulinho da Varzinhas joined), which then joined the opposition group led by Edivan and Eduardo Amorim; "Due to this new party reality and disgusted with the strategies used by the Amorim group to try to seize power at any cost, I feel obligated, according to my conscience and my political trajectory, to definitively leave the position of president and the party, as I will in no way condone this type of practice," he said.

247 - The president of the PT do B (Brazilian Workers' Party) directory in Estância, José Edinaldo da Silva, resigned last week after a change in the leadership of the party's state executive committee, which joined the opposition group led by Edivan and Eduardo Amorim. State deputy Paulinho da Varzinhas is the new president of the party, replacing Clóvis Silveira.

In a statement, José Edinaldo says he was “taken by surprise to learn that the PT do B had been yet another victim of the insatiable thirst for parties of the Amorim group.” “The dismissal was done secretly without prior consultation with those who led the party in Sergipe. Due to this new party reality and disgusted by the strategies used by the aforementioned group to try to seize power at any cost, I feel obligated, according to my conscience and my political trajectory, to definitively leave the position of president and the party, as I will in no way condone this type of practice. Finally, it is because of shameful actions like this that the population is increasingly distancing itself from the political life of this country,” he states.

I am writing to inform the people of Estância that I am resigning from my position as president of the municipal board of the PT do B (Brazilian Labour Party) in Estância. I assumed the presidency in the first half of 2011 and, together with brave comrades, we reorganized the party, preparing it to contribute to a new direction in Estância's politics. To this end, we restructured the party and recruited community leaders, religious leaders, and young entrepreneurs. As such, we participated in the 2012 elections with six candidates, obtaining 2.810 votes. We were the fourth party with the most votes from the population of Estância and elected one councilman, Sérgio da Larissa.

We were building the party with the goal of further advancing the social and political life of Estância, but given the events that have befallen the party at the state level, its continued existence is unsustainable. I was surprised to learn that the PT do B had been yet another victim of the insatiable thirst for parties within the Amorim group. Through intervention by the national executive, the state presidency was removed and handed over to Deputy Paulinho da Varzinhas, who is part of the Amorim group. The removal was done secretly, without prior consultation with those who led the party in Sergipe.

In light of this new party reality and disgusted by the strategies used by the aforementioned group to try to seize power at any cost, I feel obligated, according to my conscience and my political trajectory, to definitively resign from the position of president and leave the party, as I will in no way condone this type of practice.

Finally, it is because of shameful actions like this that the population is increasingly distancing itself from the political life of this country, but I continue to believe that the party is a very important instrument for the democratic process of any country. At the appropriate time, I will choose to become a militant in another political party that is truly committed to the people's aspirations. In the meantime, we will join other institutions in the fight for a serious political reform that contributes to ensuring that the events described above do not happen again. And I will denounce throughout the entire city how the aforementioned group acts, because I have just become one of its victims. But I will remain firm in the fight for a more dignified Estância, a more just Sergipe, and an increasingly inclusive Brazil.

José Edinaldo da Silva.
