São Paulo – After five days of intense debate, the largest meeting of the Brazilian student movement, with almost 6.500 accredited delegates from all states of Brazil, elected on Sunday (7) the activist from the Union of Socialist Youth (UJS) Carina Vitral, who is also the youngest member of the national leadership of the PCdoB, to preside over the National Union of Students (UNE) for the next two years.

In an electoral process that saw record participation from delegates representing 98% of higher education institutions in Brazil, the final plenary session of the 54th UNE Congress also deliberated on the organization's project for the next two years and approved motions of support.

This Congress was the largest held by the UNE (National Union of Students) since the organization's electoral reform in 2007, when delegates were chosen by university, not by course as before. In other words, the delegates are elected to represent the students of their university at the Congress. In total, approximately two million university students participated in the delegate election nationwide.

The 53rd UNE Congress (2013) also elected a woman, Virgínia Barros, known as Vic, as president of the organization. In the organization's history, this is the first time in 77 years that the presidency will be held successively by women. In this edition, the vice-president of the organization is also a woman, Moara Saboia, 25 years old, a Civil Engineering student at UFMG.
