The Olympic football players from Germany and France, who will be playing matches at the Rio 2016 Olympics in Salvador, will have increased security due to the recent attacks in their countries. This reinforcement is in response to a request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the Secretary of Public Security for the state of Bahia, Maurício Barbosa.
Special attention will be given to the transportation of delegations, training and accommodation locations, embarkation and disembarkation, among other things. These precautions will also extend to the fans from these countries.
According to Barbosa, because of the wave of terrorist attacks, the Olympic Games bring different concerns than the World Cup, which also had games in Salvador in 2014. "The concerns today are different, even because of the international situation we are seeing, these terrorist attacks. So we have modified the protocols regarding these new actions this year," he said.
The security plan for the Rio 2016 football matches taking place in Salvador between August 4th and 13th will include actions on the ground, with access control to the Arena Fonte Nova, and in the air, with monitoring of the airspace within a seven-kilometer radius around the venue.
The plan integrates federal, state, and municipal security and intelligence forces. The Federal Police will operate in intelligence areas, controlling the entry of foreigners, providing security for heads of state, and with rapid intervention teams.
"We have been monitoring and tracking potential risks, in contact with foreign intelligence services, which provide us with information. All measures have been and are being adopted, and we are not letting our guard down at any time. We are monitoring everything that is happening in real time," said the superintendent of the Federal Police in Bahia, Daniel Madruga.
Military
The Armed Forces will also be responsible for security at the Olympic Games in Salvador. There will be 1,4 military personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
At sea, the Navy will have the support of a helicopter flying over the area, five ships, and ten vessels from the Bahia Port Authority. In the airspace, there will be A-29 and F-5 fighter jets. The entire military operation will be conducted from the Area Defense Coordination Center (CCDA), in constant communication with the Integrated Regional Command and Control Center (CICCR), where all security forces in Salvador will be guided and information cross-referenced.
On days when Olympic football matches are held in Salvador, fans and workers in the vicinity of the Arena Fonte Nova will be checked and will need to present tickets or credentials to access the stadium. The routes for the teams, between hotels and training and match venues, will be determined shortly before departure, for the safety of the teams, who will be accompanied by helicopters and motorcycle escorts.
