World Cup Portal The Spanish national team will defend its FIFA World Cup title in Brazil. By defeating Georgia 2-0 in Albacete (ESP), the Spaniards secured first place in Group I of the European Qualifiers and qualified for the 2014 World Cup. This will be the team's fourteenth participation in the World Cup.

The first goal came in the 25th minute of the first half. Iniesta exchanged passes with Pedro and crossed from the left to Negredo, who finished to open the scoring. This was the 200th goal since coach Vicente Del Bosque took over the Spanish National Team.

The second goal was scored 15 minutes into the second half by Juan Mata, who had replaced Pedro three minutes earlier. After a cross into the box, Navas headed the ball towards the middle, and the Georgian player cleared it poorly. Mata volleyed it home to increase Spain's lead.

Campaign

The road to Brazil included six wins and two draws in the European Qualifiers, totaling 20 points. Shortly before the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, the Spanish – who had won the 2008 European Championship – lifted the trophy again in the tournament in June 2012.

Until winning the World Cup in South Africa, Spain had never progressed beyond the quarter-finals in World Cups. Their best result before 2010 had been a fourth-place finish in the final group stage of the 50 World Cup, also held in Brazil.

In 2013, the world champions participated in the Confederations Cup held in June in Brazil. Spain reached the final of the competition, but was defeated by Brazil 3-0 in a historic match at the Maracanã.
