Nuclear energy will be a topic of discussion at Rio+20.

Agency Brazil - The development and proper use of nuclear energy will be discussed during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, from June 13 to 22, in Rio de Janeiro. The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, stressed today (4) that the subject is among the topics to be discussed at the meeting that begins in nine days.

"The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, which begins next week, will discuss sustainable energy, water, food and oceans within a concept of energy planning," Amano highlighted.

For Brazilian authorities, Rio+20 will be the largest global conference on environmental preservation, sustainable development, and the green economy, setting a new standard for the sector. It is expected that more than 120 heads of state and government will participate in the event. In his speech today, Amano reviewed the activities related to discussions on expanding sustainable development based on nuclear energy. According to him, it is possible to have "good practices" and define a long-term plan. For 2013, the IAEA is organizing the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy of the Century, which will take place from June 21 to 27 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
