Alagoas247 - Through an amendment to Provisional Measure number 636, Senator Fernando Collor de Mello (PTB-AL) defends the need to modify laws 12.844 and 12.872, which regulate the renegotiation of debts for producers in the semi-arid region. With the proposal, the parliamentarian believes that the injustices committed against rural producers in the Northeast will finally be corrected. The need for change was brought to discussion by the senator in the plenary session last Tuesday (18).

In the amendment text, Collor points out that in the Northeast region, especially in the state of Alagoas, dozens of rural producers are suffering from the effects of the worst drought in the last 70 years. Therefore, the senator warns, laws 12.844 and 12.872 need to be modified, thus benefiting all rural producers included in the area covered by the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene), as well as assisting those municipalities that have not declared a state of public calamity or emergency.

Data from the Alagoas Agriculture and Livestock Federation indicate that rural producers in 42 municipalities in Alagoas cannot be eligible for discounts or loan renegotiation, as provided for in the general rules of the laws. To correct the distortions, Senator Fernando Collor presented, this Thursday (20), the amendment to the rapporteur of the Provisional Measure, Senator Wellington Dias (PT-PI).

The legislator argues that due to the prolonged drought, many producers are unable to afford the financing. As a result of non-payment, many families are losing homes, land, vehicles, and other property due to debt enforcement.

Finally, the senator points out that the collapse of rural producers in Alagoas is exacerbated by the crisis in the sugar and ethanol sector. According to him, many banks have denied loans and financing to rural producers, making it impossible for these workers to restructure their livelihoods.
