In Goiânia, an Army soldier drowns during training.

The Editorial Team An Army soldier drowned late Wednesday afternoon (January 23rd) during aquatic training at the Special Operations Brigade, an Army unit located in Jardim Guanabara, Goiânia. According to Major Luiz Gustavo Stumpf, the soldier, Kevin, 20 years old, was participating in a swimming instruction class at the unit's aquatic complex when he drowned in a pool at around 5 pm.

“We still don’t know the circumstances of the drowning. At the time, about 30 people were participating in the class, and there was a medical team, including an ambulance, monitoring everything. The soldier was pulled from the water by doctors, who tried to resuscitate him,” says the major. Having failed to resuscitate the victim, the medical team took the soldier to Santa Genoveva Hospital, also in Goiânia, where the young man's death was confirmed.

Major Stumpf explains that there are two pools in the Brigade's aquatic complex, one of which is Olympic-sized and the other, normally used for swimming instruction, is deeper. "I don't know the exact depth, but it's deeper," he says. "What I can say is that the young soldier knew how to swim, as did everyone else participating in the class, and there was a medical team monitoring everything, but unfortunately what happened, happened," he laments.

According to the major, the soldier's family is receiving all necessary assistance. "We are already providing all support to the family, including psychological support. We are available to help in any way necessary," he assured. In a statement, the Army confirmed that an inquiry has already been opened to investigate the case.

Burial

The young man's wake is being held at the Maria Mãe Santíssima Church, in the Boa Vista sector, in Goiânia. The burial, as announced by the family, is scheduled for 5 pm this Thursday (January 24th), at the Vale da Paz cemetery, also in the capital of Goiás.
