In 2016, AL recorded 7 violent deaths in prisons.

According to data from the State Secretariat for Resocialization and Social Inclusion (Seris), 18 deaths were recorded in the Alagoas prison system last year; of this total, seven were proven, through forensic analysis, to have occurred violently; while in Brazilian prisons, almost 400 violent deaths were recorded.

Alagoas 247 The State Secretariat for Resocialization and Social Inclusion (Seris) informed... Gazetaweb, that 18 deaths were recorded in the prison system last year. Of this total, seven were proven, through technical expertise, to have occurred violently. The remaining 11 were clinical deaths.

Three of the violent incidents involved inmates held at the Maximum Security Prison (PSM). Luciano Soares da Silva Rocha, Ricardo Afonso Ferreira Sarmento, and Marcondes da Silva Soares were killed inside this prison during 2016.

Manoel Messias da Silva and Marcos Antônio dos Santos were found dead inside the Cyridião Durval e Silva prison with signs of violent death. Rafael Gonçalves Borges died inside a cell at Baldomero Cavalcanti prison, and Raul Bispo died at the Judicial Psychiatric Center (CPJ), formerly known as the Judicial Asylum.

The most recent case, which involved a natural death, occurred on December 28th of last year. An inmate at the Baldomero Cavalcanti Prison was found dead in module two of that unit. 

Inmate Giovanni Wellinsson Barbosa shared cell eight, in module two, with seven other prisoners, who were taken to give statements to the Civil Police. See the photo below for the complete list of deaths. Giovanni's case is not yet included in the list.

"The prison system in Alagoas is transparent, and we don't hide the numbers. This reflects the reality of what happened last year. We must emphasize that we have a controlled, organized, and well-mapped system that covers all situations," assesses Lieutenant Colonel Marcos Sérgio Freitas, Secretary of Resocialization and Social Inclusion.

The data on deaths that occurred last year in the Alagoas prison system were provided by the Research and Statistics Department (CPEST), which belongs to Seris.

A survey conducted by the G1 website shows that nearly 400 violent deaths occurred in Brazilian prisons in 2016. The data places Alagoas with a record of 14 violent deaths last year, a number refuted by Secretary Marcos Sérgio, based on data from the state agency's statistics department.
