Eliton is going to the PP without widening the gap with Caiado.
Vice-Governor announces he will join the PP party of Congressman Roberto Balestra; affiliation will take place at an event in the capital on June 6th. José Eliton and Ronaldo Caiado distanced themselves as the former became a loyal supporter of Perillo. His continued membership in the DEM party became untenable with Caiado's candidacy for governor in 2014. "I am proud of my trajectory in the DEM. I had no alternative but to leave, out of consistency with my participation in the government," said Eliton in a peaceful tone.
Goiás 247_ Vice-Governor José Eliton confirmed today that he will join the PP party, which is part of the support base for Governor Marconi Perillo. In a meeting with federal deputies Roberto Balestra and Sandes Júnior, Eliton sealed the agreement, and the affiliation event will be on June 6th in Goiânia.
José Eliton's departure from the DEM party had been expected since the second half of last year. He began to disagree with his political mentor and congressman Ronaldo Caiado, the head of the DEM in Goiás. The main reason was Eliton's rapid rapprochement with the governor. Over time, he became closer to Perillo than to Caiado. That's when the relationship soured completely.
To make matters worse, Caiado's insistence on running for governor of the state in 2014 practically made José Eliton's continued membership in the DEM party impossible, since the party is part of the governing coalition, but Caiado has already obtained carte blanche even from the party's national leadership to move forward with his project.
The vice-governor leaves the DEM party amicably. "I am proud of my trajectory in the DEM. I had no alternative but to leave, out of consistency with my participation in the government. But that doesn't give me the right to discredit the party," he said this Monday.
Eliton had no shortage of options. There was talk of PSDB and PSD, but Congressman Balestra did everything he could to increase the power and influence of PP within the allied base and spared no effort to win over the vice-governor.
