RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Coach Dunga has left his position as head coach of the Brazilian national team after the team's failure in the Copa América Centenario, in which Brazil was eliminated in the first round for the first time since 1987, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on Tuesday.

"The Brazilian Football Confederation announces that it has decided to dissolve the coaching staff of the Brazilian national team. The coordinator of national teams, Gilmar Rinaldi, coach Dunga, and his entire team are leaving their positions," the organization said in a statement on its website.

The announcement signifies the end of the coach's second stint, who reassumed the national team in July 2014 after Brazil finished 4th in the World Cup at home, with defeats of 7-1 to Germany in the semi-final and 3-0 to the Netherlands in the final.

Dunga, who also coached the Brazilian national team from 2006 to 2010, has accumulated poor results in his second stint leading the team: in addition to being eliminated in the first round of the Copa América Centenario this week, the team lost in the quarterfinals of last year's Copa América and is currently in 6th place in the South American qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup.

The coach's departure also leaves the Brazilian Olympic team without a coach less than two months before the Rio 2016 Games.
