Senator Fernando Bezerra Coelho (PSB/PE) allegedly received bribes from businessman João Carlos Lyra de Melo, who is believed to be the true owner of the plane that killed Eduardo Campos during the 2014 presidential campaign, according to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office. FBC, as he is known in Pernambuco, voted in favor of opening the impeachment process and is the father of the Minister of Mines and Energy, Fernando Bezerra Filho.
PE 247 – Another ally of interim president Michel Temer is facing legal problems. This time, it's Senator Fernando Bezerra Coelho (PSB-PE).
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, he received bribes from businessman João Carlos Lyra de Melo, who is believed to be the true owner of the plane that killed Eduardo Campos during the 2014 presidential campaign.
According to the investigation, Lyra de Melo passed on bribes from Camargo Corrêa, which was carrying out the construction of the Abreu e Lima Refinery in Pernambuco.
“João Carlos Lyra Pessoa de Melo Filho was identified by former employees of Camargo Corrêa as the person responsible for delivering the bribes owed by that construction company to former governor Eduardo Campos and senator Fernando Bezerra Coelho in connection with the works at the Abreu e Lima refinery. He formally presents himself as the sole purchaser of the PR-AFA aircraft, although such a transaction was not formalized,” the investigation establishes.
The revelations come from Operation Turbulence, which dismantled a scheme involving the embezzlement of R$ 600 million, investigated shortly after the accident that killed Campos and six other people.
