Alagoas 247 - The judge of the Court of Justice of Alagoas, Elisabeth Carvalho, stated this Thursday morning (24), during an interview with TV Gazeta, that, despite the progress made in recent years, there is still a lack of public policies aimed at women in Alagoas.

To try to meet some of the demand, the Judiciary inaugurated the "Lilac Room," which will house the State Coordination Office for Women in Situations of Domestic and Family Violence. The initiative is part of a national project and aims to assist victims of violence.

"There is a national project spearheaded by [Supreme Federal Court] Justice Carmen Lúcia, called Justice for Peace at Home. In Alagoas, there was no place to provide this service. We spoke with the president of the Court of Justice and he granted us the space," explains the judge.

According to her, the room will operate on the ground floor of the Courthouse, between 7:30 am and 13:30 pm. "They [women] go there seeking guidance and training. From there [the room] they will be referred to the police station or the court, as appropriate."

According to the judge, there is a lack of effective public policies to reduce the high number of domestic violence cases in Alagoas. She cites as an example the number of specialized police stations in the state and says she has discussed the matter with Governor Renan Filho (PMDB).

"[Domestic violence] is an old cultural phenomenon. Public policies are lacking. We only have two women's police stations in Alagoas. One in Maceió and the other in Arapiraca. In the Sertão region, there is no support whatsoever. The North Coast is completely abandoned. There is no protection," she emphasizes.

Elisabeth Carvalho states that it is necessary to expand the reach of specialized police stations to more populous cities, such as Penedo, Palmeira dos Índios, and Delmiro Gouveia. "Is she [a victim of domestic violence] going to report it to a police station that can barely handle the demands of daily life? There's a lack of policies more focused on women."

Another point defended by the judge is a massive investment in education. "Quality education is necessary. Teachers need to be qualified. We can only defend ourselves if we know our rights," she concludes.
