Bahia 247 - Politicians, businesspeople, campaign donors, and relatives of state representatives are among the beneficiaries of a scholarship program for needy students paid by the Legislative Assembly of Bahia between 2011 and 2014. The program consumed R$ 19 million from Bahia's coffers, and the funds were deposited into the accounts of 3.349 students or their guardians.

A survey by the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, based on data from the 'Meu Congresso Nacional' portal, which maps information on parliamentary activities and donations to candidates, reveals that 80 campaign donors from 2014 are among the beneficiaries. They donated approximately R$ 330 to candidates despite being considered 'needy,' with R$ 163 going to the campaigns of the deputies themselves, who decided who would receive the aid.

According to Folha, the PRB was the party that received the most resources for its candidates. Federal deputies Márcio Marinho and Tia Eron, and state deputy Sildevan Nóbrega (in that order from left to right in the image) together received R$ 48 from eight scholarship recipients. Former state deputy Deraldo Damasceno (PSL) received the most: R$ 34 for the campaign of three scholarship recipients who, together, received R$ 14 in scholarship funds.

They all worked for the congressman and earned salaries between R$ 5 and R$ 11. Augusto Castro (PSDB) received R$ 15 in donations from an employee who received R$ 22 in scholarships over the last three years.

According to the publication, among the 'needy students' is the current state deputy Alex Lima (PTN), who received R$ 2.500 in aid in 2012 – two years before being elected. In 2014, he declared having R$ 1 million in assets. He claims to have gone through a period of financial difficulties.
