Mines 247 – The tragic accident that killed three people on Nossa Senhora do Carmo Avenue, in the southern part of Belo Horizonte, last week, has already forced the city government to take action. A project by BHTrans and municipal, state, and federal agencies foresees the installation of new speed cameras, cameras, and variable message signs (VMS) on the avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in the capital of Minas Gerais.

Following the tragic accident that killed three people on Nossa Senhora do Carmo Avenue, the Belo Horizonte City Hall decided to intensify traffic safety for trucks and tractor-trailers on the road. Heavy vehicles have been prohibited from circulating on the avenue since January 25, 2010.

At a meeting held this Tuesday (12), the Executive Group for Articulated Traffic Management (Gegat) proposed increasing the number of speed cameras on BR-356; installing an integrated control post operating 24 hours a day; installing video monitoring cameras above the control post location with image generation for remote monitoring of cargo vehicle traffic, in addition to installing variable message panels (VMP) on the BR-356 section, between Raja Gabaglia Avenue and the Belvedere interchange.

However, there is no deadline for the measures to take effect. Gegat reported that BHTrans, the Municipal Guard, the Department of Highways (DER), the State Highway Police, the Federal Highway Police, and the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) will be involved in the project.

Gegat will meet again this week to assess the technical details and locations for the installation of signage, speed reduction equipment, cameras, and control posts.
