After nearly three months of obsequious silence, Senator Demóstenes Torres (independent-GO, photo below) will return to speak publicly in the Senate this Tuesday about the accusations against him.
But, unlike his previous speeches, which were almost always used to attack the government, Demóstenes will have the difficult task of defending himself before the Senate Ethics Committee against accusations of breach of parliamentary decorum due to his intense and murky involvement in defending the businesses of illegal gambling operator Carlinhos Cachoeira.
His expulsion from the Council, where the vote is open, is already considered a certainty among senators.
According to lawyer Antonio Carlos de Almeida Castro, known as Kakay, Demóstenes will give an initial presentation highlighting the high points of his term in office, in an attempt to convince the audience that his performance was dignified.
Next, he will address each of the accusations leveled against him in the complaint filed by PSOL and in the report by Senator Humberto Costa (PT-PE).
When the defense is over, which should last half an hour, Demosthenes will make himself available for questions. According to his lawyer, he will answer his colleagues.
