"Unwavering defense of freedom of the press"

This was the subject of a motion presented by the deputy leader of the PMDB in the Chamber of Deputies and president of the party in Bahia, Lúcio Vieira Lima, at the party's national convention over the weekend; the initiative is a response to the PT ally who has supported a citizen-initiated project on a new regulatory framework for communications.

For pessimists, the PMDB leaders in Bahia are indeed willing to sabotage the national alliance with the PT. Deputy leader of the PMDB in the Chamber of Deputies and president of the party in Bahia, Lúcio Vieira Lima presented on Saturday (2) a motion of "uncompromising defense of freedom of the press".

Lúcio himself states that the action is a response to the PT's ally who, especially through figures like José Dirceu, José Genoino, and its president Rui Falcão, has supported a popular initiative project on a new regulatory framework for communications.

"We cannot allow a political party to advocate for the curtailment of press freedom. Society owes a debt to the press, which is a fundamental part of democracy. This motion is in defense of Brazil," justifies the deputy leader of the PMDB in the Chamber of Deputies and president of the party in Bahia, Lúcio Vieira Lima (BA), author of the proposal presented at the party's national convention over the weekend.

The controversy is stalled at the Ministry of Communications, which recently announced yet another postponement of the new regulatory framework. Despite pressure from the Workers' Party (PT), the Minister-Chief of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Gilberto Carvalho, stated that the matter is not on the government's agenda.

Among the changes desired by the Workers' Party members are legislation regarding radio and TV concessions and the adaptation of content production and dissemination to the norms of the Constitution.
