Public Defender's Office wants to shut down prison screening process.
The Public Defender's Office of Alagoas has requested the judge of the Criminal Enforcement Court to immediately close the triage sector of the Baldomero Cavalcanti prison in Maceió; this measure is the result of complaints from relatives of inmates, reporting that several people have been held in the Baldomero Cavalcanti triage sector for more than six months in inhumane conditions.
Alagoas247 - The Public Defender's Office of the State of Alagoas asked the judge of the Criminal Execution Court, José Braga Neto, to immediately close the triage sector of the Baldomero Cavalcanti prison, in Maceió, after finding irregularities at the site. According to public defender João Maurício, the request, formalized last Thursday, seeks the closure of the space, so that the inmates can be transferred to other modules. However, as of this Tuesday (19), according to the Public Defender's Office, the Justice has not yet commented on the matter.
The measure forwarded to the judge is the result of complaints from relatives of inmates, reporting that several people are being held in the Baldomero Cavalcante Screening Unit, some for more than six months, in absolutely inhumane conditions, without the minimum conditions for survival.
"The reports were confirmed through an inspection by the Community Council and the Public Defender's Office. And we found that the occupants of the aforementioned triage area are housed in cells that do not have a bathroom. This is because the only cell equipped with a bathroom is closed off due to a hole in the wall," explained the public defender.
To attend to their physiological needs, the public defender said, the inmates are taken out of their cells once a day to go to a bathroom, returning to isolation afterward. "When they feel the need to use the bathroom, after their only daily outing, especially at night, the inmates relieve themselves in 'take-out containers' and PET bottles and throw them through the cell bars, which increases the terrible stench that permeates the environment," the defender emphasized.
In addition to the lack of toilets in the triage cells, the defense attorney also noted the absence of electric lighting and ventilation, since the existing windows face inwards, preventing air circulation.
"The inmates there are not afforded the basic rights granted to others, such as visits from relatives and friends, sunbathing, and leisure time, since they remain locked in their cells for almost 24 hours a day, only leaving for the short period necessary to attend to their physiological needs once a day," he emphasized.
Furthermore, the defense attorney continued, "in the unsanitary cells, moldy from leaks, there are no mattresses, forcing the inmates to sleep on concrete beds or directly on the floor, supported only by cardboard." "There are no conditions there to house any human being. This situation can no longer be tolerated, which is why it is necessary to close the triage area until reforms are carried out," added defense attorney João Maurício.
