Decree No. 16.701, designating the members of the State Committee for the Prevention and Combat of Torture in the State of Piauí, was published in the State Official Gazette on August 4th.
The body, established by decree no. 14.233 of June 11, 2010, is linked to the State Secretariat of Justice, within the Integrated Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Torture in Brazil.
Among its functions, the committee must conduct a diagnosis of any potential torture practices, with a view to investigating and punishing such cases, and develop the State Plan for the Prevention and Control of Torture.
In March of this year, entities within the state justice system signed the Protocol of Procedure for Investigating Reports of Torture, which seeks to prevent the practice of torture of prisoners in the Piauí penitentiary system.
According to the Secretary of State for Justice, Daniel Oliveira, the appointment of the committee members places Piauí alongside other states and entities that advocate for the guarantee of human rights.
"The committee will work with representatives from entities historically linked to the defense of human rights, through policies that ensure the full realization of human rights and citizenship," Oliveira emphasizes.
