CBV – Cruzeiro (MG) is the new champion of the men's volleyball Superliga. After finishing as runner-up last year, the celestial team beat Vôlei Futuro (SP), coming from behind, this Saturday 21 by 3 sets to 1 (24/26, 25/18, 25/13 and 25/19), in 2h13 at the Poliesportivo gymnasium, in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), and won the title of the 11/12 edition.
The following year, after receiving the silver medal, coach Marcelo Mendez celebrated the championship trophy. “Winning here is very important to me,” stated the Argentinian, who linked this year's title to last year's runner-up finish. “I think confidence was fundamental. In difficult moments of the match, the team had the patience to play. This was built through daily work. It was a learning experience for the group. Last year we were very close. This year the group matured and played much better. It's a victory for the group.”
The top scorer in the final, with 20 points, outside hitter Maurício expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for his current team. “Today I am a more experienced player. Cruzeiro gave me the chance to help the team become champions, and there is the result. Now I know I have to prepare even more because every year we have the best championship in the world,” said Maurício.
The third-highest scorer in the Superliga, opposite hitter Wallace, thanked the fans for their support, who traveled from Contagem to São Bernardo do Campo. “They always cheer for our team, they help a lot, and today was no different,” commented the attacker, who also spoke about the match. “It was a difficult game, but we managed to execute our tactical plan, and our unity was fundamental. Besides that, everyone played well.”
Setter and captain William lifted the trophy and left the court as the best player of the match. According to the player, the title is a reward for the season. “We know our worth, our daily effort, and we were crowned. In sports, one day you win and another you lose. We've won a lot and we lost in last year's Superliga. That's the life of an athlete. And we have to learn much more from defeat than from victory,” highlighted William Arjona.
