Crime affects more than 20% of the population of Alagoas.
A study released by the National Secretariat of Public Security, an agency of the Ministry of Justice, reveals that more than 20% of Alagoas residents have been victims of crime. The research was conducted in partnership with the Center for Studies on Crime and Public Security (Crisp) and the Datafolha Institute.

According to the survey, 20,5% of the population of Alagoas was a victim of crime in the year prior to the research. Another indicator for Alagoas that appears in the research concerns Maceió. The capital city registers 23,2% of its population as victims of some crime listed in the research. The degree of trust in the police was also highlighted. Only 17,1% of those surveyed trust the Military Police, while 15,9% trust the Civil Police.
78 people were interviewed in 346 municipalities between June 2010 and May 2011 and between June 2012 and October 2012. In the survey, they were asked if, in the twelve months preceding the survey, they had been victims of any of the twelve listed crimes (assault, discrimination, theft of an object, fraud, traffic accident, robbery of an object, car theft, sexual offense, motorcycle theft, car robbery, motorcycle robbery, and express kidnapping).
