The creator of Pokémon GO plans to sell the technology behind its games.

(Reuters)- Niantic Labs, the Google-backed startup behind the popular game Pokémon Go, plans to sell the technology that powers its titles to other video game developers, the company said Thursday.

Pokémon Go has been the biggest hit so far among games that use augmented reality, where digital characters are superimposed onto the real world.

Niantic, which was spun off from Google in 2015, has been developing a technology platform to build future titles, such as a Harry Potter game it is producing with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which still has no set release date.

Niantic, which has raised $225 million in venture capital, detailed its "Real World Platform" on Thursday, hoping other gaming companies will one day use it, though it did not give a timeline for its sale.

This effort is significant because both Google and Apple have been attracting developers with their own tools for creating augmented reality applications, respectively called ARCore and ARKit.

Reuters also previously reported that Niantic plans to build a 3D world map, an essential component for high-performance games, using data collected from its players' mobile phone cameras.

Niantic is one of dozens of companies willing to provide tools for creating augmented reality applications. CB Insights, which monitors venture capital funding, reported last year that $3,4 billion in venture capital was focused on virtual and augmented reality businesses.
