Netflix announced last Thursday (12) that the creations of producer and screenwriter Álex Pina will be exclusive to its streaming service. Pina's main and best-known work is La Casa de Papel, a Spanish series divided into two parts that became a worldwide phenomenon in Brazil on the same platform. According to the company, the exclusivity agreement begins with the production of the third season of the series.
For those unfamiliar, La Casa de Papel was initially created in partnership with the Spanish television network Antena 3, but it gained worldwide popularity and became a favorite for many when it premiered on Netflix in December 2017. Its success was so great that the show was initially planned to end, but it was renewed for a third part in April of this year, with a planned premiere in 2019. Another project in development by the producer that will be exclusive to Netflix is Sky Rojo, an action drama with a female protagonist, also planned for next year. From here on out
Future work
Pina says he will produce series and "projects" dedicated to the streaming service to retain its base of over 125 million subscribers worldwide. In a statement, the producer said the partnership is a dream come true in a world where series are becoming one of the great cultural phenomena. The artist also praised the service for giving opportunities to small creators, who can bring their productions to everyone and share space with blockbusters.
Erik Barmack, vice president of original content at Netflix, praised the screenwriter and the team at his production company, Vancouver Media. The executive says he hopes he continues "breaking barriers and conquering the world" with his stories.
Besides La Casa de Papel, which deals with the robbery of the Central Bank in Spain, Pina is also responsible for Sou Louco Por Você (I'm Crazy About You), one of the biggest box office hits in recent years in Spanish cinema, and has won awards from the Miami International Film Festival for the film Kamikaze, and from the Málaga Film Festival in Spain for Fuga de Cérebros (Brain Drain), which has also spawned a sequel.
Today he is the name behind series such as Vis a Vis, El Barco and Los Hombres de Paco.
