Arms race with AI will revolutionize combat and bring serious risks, says Foreign Policy magazine.
The American magazine Foreign Policy highlighted the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in a new arms race between the world's major powers.
Sputnik Brazil - The magazine also emphasizes that AI will be a major revolution in various areas, but especially in combat tactics and strategies, potentially changing the course of war completely.
According to the publication, AI promises to transform the geopolitics of warfare and deterrence, albeit in ways that are not necessarily comfortable.
Technology also promises to make war less lethal and possibly strengthen deterrence, being deployed by military forces through AI-driven drones in air forces, navies, and armies.
FP highlights the fact that AI can make decisions in a matter of minutes, instead of hours or days, leading powers to apply the technology to strategic and tactical issues, and even in nuclear war.
However, Professor Herbert Lin of Stanford University warns of the danger of excessive use of technology in sensitive matters, such as the command and control of weapons.
James Johnson, from the University of Aberdeen, is the author of the book "AI and the Bomb," in which he cites the risks of an accidental nuclear war between the US and China, triggered by a rash decision by AI.
Another danger highlighted by the magazine is the possibility of AI falling into the hands of terrorists who, in turn, could create dirty bombs or lethal devices.
The new AI arms race is underway, and there's probably little that can be done to stop it.
"This [AI] could lead to a human error of over-reliance. It's a precision-guided munition against human intelligence and rationality," Lin points out.
