Pernambuco 247 - Former federal deputy Pedro Corrêa (PP-PE) will be transferred from the Professor Everardo Luna Observation and Sorting Center (Cotel), in Abreu e Lima, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR), to the Canhotinho penitentiary, in the Pernambuco hinterland, 210 kilometers from the Pernambuco capital. Convicted in the 'mensalão' scandal, the former parliamentarian will serve a sentence of seven years and two months for passive corruption and money laundering. The date of the transfer will still be defined by the Pernambuco Secretariat of Social Reintegration (Seres).

The decision was announced this Tuesday (7), the day the defendant turns 66, by the judge of the 1st Criminal Execution Court, Luiz Gomes da Rocha Neto, in a press conference. "When the inmate arrived (in Pernambuco), our decision was to receive him at Cotel because it is our triage center, the gateway to our prison system," he said. "In recent days, documents have been added proving that he is established in the region, therefore, although he lives in Boa Viagem [in the South Zone of Recife], I technically opted for Canhotinho," the magistrate added.

The defendant in Criminal Action 470, the 'mensalão' scandal, was taken to Cotel prison, since the documentation sent to the state by the Federal Court did not indicate in which prison unit Corrêa would be detained. The judge's decision will be forwarded to the president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Minister Joaquim Barbosa.

The former parliamentarian will serve his sentence under a semi-open regime, where he is allowed to work during the day and return to prison at night and on weekends. Corrêa will work as a doctor in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, also in the Agreste region, receiving a salary of R$ 5.

Initially, the family requested that the former congressman be transferred to the Itamaracá Agricultural Penitentiary (PAI). However, due to the extremely poor conditions of the facility, Corrêa's relatives requested that he be moved to another location for security reasons.

During his transfer from Brasília to Recife, the defendant was handcuffed, provoking outrage among his family, who threatened to sue the Federal Police arguing that the action violated the elderly statute. Corrêa's relatives will still evaluate the case.
