The body of former president João Goulart will be exhumed.

247 The National Truth Commission and the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio Grande do Sul have decided to exhume the body of former president João Goulart.

Goulart died in December 1976 while in exile in Argentina. Despite the official version of Goulart's death, which claims it was due to a heart attack during his exile in Argentina after being deposed by the 1964 coup, the former president's family believes he may have been poisoned. João Goulart's body is buried in the cemetery of São Borja, in Rio Grande do Sul.

Criminal lawyer Rosa Cardoso, a member of the Truth Commission, said that the "conclusive evidence" that Goulart was monitored in exile by "Operation Condor" (an alliance between the dictatorships of the Southern Cone in the 1970s to persecute opponents of the region's military regimes) also suggests that he may have been assassinated on the orders of the Brazilian dictatorship.
