Copasa will tighten its grip on industries and large consumers.

Sinara Meireles, president of Copasa, stated that she will increase inspections of industries and large water consumers to prevent waste; she also expressed her opinion on the possibility of surcharges for high water consumption: “We are not ruling out this possibility (of adopting the surcharge). We are working with this scenario. We hope we will not have to use (the measure). But, given the pessimistic forecasts and the (low) volume of reservoirs, especially in the metropolitan region, which affects 5,5 million people, if the appeal to reduce consumption is not spontaneously heeded, some tariff mechanism may be used.”

Minas 247 -  The president of Copasa, Sinara Meireles, announced at a meeting with mayors from the Mucuri and Jequitinhonha valleys that the state government will increase inspections of industries and large water consumption sites to prevent water waste. When asked about a possible surcharge on those who use more water in the coming months, Sinara replied that it is possible, given the recent less-than-optimistic weather forecasts.

“We are not ruling out that possibility (of adopting the surcharge). We are working with that scenario. We hope we won't have to use (the measure). But, given the pessimistic forecasts and the (low) volume of reservoirs, especially in the metropolitan region, which affects 5,5 million people, if the appeal to reduce consumption is not met spontaneously, some tariff mechanism may be used,” said Sinara.

The president emphasized that the task force created in conjunction with the state government aims to raise public awareness: "The goal is to make people reflect on the need to reduce water consumption."
