Ceará 247 - Shopkeepers occupied the plenary of the Fortaleza City Council on the morning of this Thursday (26), and managed to suspend the session that would vote on Bill 0342/2016, which proposes the operation of commerce for 24 hours in the Center, in shopping malls and around them in the Capital of Ceará.

According to Helenice Pereira, director of the Commercial Workers' Union, the consequences of this project are extremely damaging for workers in Ceará. "We know that Fortaleza has no infrastructure for commerce to operate 24 hours a day. We don't have quality transportation, quality public safety, or daycare for the children of workers. We have no guarantee that our labor rights will be respected," she said.

The director also pointed out that the labor reform removed 119 items from the CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws), including the right to have a formal employment contract. "The mayor says it's to generate jobs, but what kind of jobs? But at what cost will we generate these jobs? At the cost of our lives?" she questioned.
