Brasilia 247 With 89% of the work completed, the Mané Garrincha National Stadium in Brasília is entering its final phase of construction. Workers have begun installing the arena's roof. The GDF (Government of the Federal District) expects to have all the equipment in place by the end of March.

The roof membrane is divided into upper and lower sections and has a total material area of 90 m². Two teams work in shifts, totaling 100 workers. The roof material is self-cleaning, meaning that any dirt that accumulates on the stadium roof will be removed by sunlight itself, thanks to the PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating with TiO2 (titanium dioxide), a type of fiberglass with photocatalytic properties.

"This means that when the membrane comes into contact with the sun, the dirt will decompose. It is capable of capturing the pollution of a thousand cars a day. The membrane is self-cleaning, does not catch fire, and reflects ultraviolet rays. It is yet another ingredient in the overall sustainability applied to the National Stadium," explained the Extraordinary Secretary for the World Cup, Claudio Monteiro.

According to Monteiro, the covering came from Japan, and it also uses rainwater to complete the cleaning of the National Stadium's membrane. The white color will also facilitate the passage of sunlight and the absorption of solar rays, thus reducing the temperature inside the arena.

Governor Agnelo Queiroz has reaffirmed that the new National Stadium will be ready in time for the sporting competitions and will be inaugurated on April 21st, Brasília's anniversary. Therefore, it will be within the new deadline established by FIFA so that preparations for the Confederations Cup are not compromised.

Brasilia will host the opening match of the World Cup, scheduled for June 15th of this year, with the game between Brazil and Japan. The nation's capital will also host seven matches during the 2014 World Cup.

While workers are installing the roof, other professionals are continuing with the installation of the stadium seats and the finishing touches on the VIP boxes.
