Ceará 247 - Five municipalities in Ceará are now eligible to host medical courses, as announced this Tuesday morning (3), in a session at the Legislative Assembly of Ceará. Iguatu, Quixeramobim, Crateús, Itapipoca and Russas received authorization from the Ministry of Education (MEC) to implement the colleges.

For Representative Miriam Sobreira (Pros), whose electoral base is in Iguatu, the fight to decentralize higher education in the state has been going on for a long time. "We started demanding action in this regard when Cid Gomes took over the state government. Yesterday we received this news. Whether it will be public or private will depend on the universities and colleges there qualifying for it. But the important thing is that we are going to establish this course," she says. Across Brazil, 49 cities received approval from the Ministry of Education, according to Miriam. "Of these, five came to Ceará. Credit to the Minister of Education, who prioritized our state," she added.

In his speech, Representative Ely Aguiar (PSDC) lamented the absence of the municipality of Crato from the MEC's list and criticized the municipal administration. "Crato was the first to appear as a possible municipality to receive the school, but ended up being left out. It received visits from MEC technicians, but did not prepare the documentation due to negligence, lack of care, responsibility, and commitment to the population," he declared.

The municipality in the Cariri region, however, can still have hope of receiving a medical school. In a conversation with Ceará 247 in early February, federal deputy and government leader in the Chamber, José Guimarães (PT), reported that the Ministry of Education is already studying the date for a new technical inspection. "In the meeting, I received confirmation that the process for installing the Medical School has already been resumed and, soon, the ministry will inform the municipal government and our office of the date of the new inspection," he announced.
