Bahia 247 - In just three hours, approximately 80 millimeters (mm) of rain fell in Salvador's Federação neighborhood, according to data recorded by the automatic rain gauges of the National Center for Monitoring, Alerts and Natural Disasters (Cemaden). Furthermore, according to the data, more than 100 millimeters (mm) of rain fell in the last 24 hours.

According to the sub-coordinator of Disaster Response for the Civil Defense of Salvador (Codesal), Francisco Costa Júnior, the concentrated rainfall in a short period of time caused several areas of the city to flood. "The peak occurred between 10 am and 13 pm today, which caused the flooding, even with all the canal cleaning that the City Hall has been carrying out."

Since the beginning of this year, the Superintendency of Conservation and Public Works (Sucop) has cleaned at least 20 canals in the city. This action also contributes to reducing flooding.

"It is of fundamental importance that canals, rivers, lakes, and storm drains remain clean, and for this, it is important that citizens collaborate and do their part by disposing of trash in appropriate locations. Otherwise, water accumulation may be greater, causing even more disruption for the population," the city hall said in a statement.
