247 - In a social media post, French chef and television presenter Olivier Anquier, who is now a naturalized Brazilian citizen, said he refuses to close his establishments due to the coronavirus pandemic, which he called "paranoia forcibly injected."

"I refuse! I refuse to accept this forcibly injected paranoia. I refuse to be a hypocrite. I refuse to be a coward. I refuse to be just another sheep in the flock. I refuse to hide at home and abandon my customers who left their homes and went to my bakeries or restaurants," he wrote.

The chef, who has lived in Brazil since 1979 and owns two restaurants in São Paulo, criticized the measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“I make a point of being present and greeting each of my clients, as I did yesterday morning before traveling to São Sebastião so that, at the end of the afternoon, I could present my show to an audience made up of simple people of all ages who came in large numbers and happily, and who think like me. Especially because, for many, the reality of life is much more cruel and violent than the coronavirus,” he added.

The post was met with negative reactions from his more than 600 followers, including celebrities who criticized his stance, stating that it does nothing to help fight the pandemic.

"The line between not panicking and being irresponsible is delicate. Extreme caution is necessary," warned presenter and filmmaker Marina Person.

“It’s a shame, it’s reckless of you not to recognize the seriousness of the situation. We are only at the beginning of the virus’s arrival here. All the countries that disregarded its importance are now in a severe health crisis. This is called selfishness and irresponsibility,” lamented actress Julia Lemmertz;

I refuse! I refuse to accept this forcibly injected paranoia. I refuse to be a hypocrite. I refuse to be a coward. I refuse to be just another sheep in the flock. I refuse to hide at home and abandon my customers who left their homes and went to my bakeries or restaurants. I insist on being present and greeting each one of them, as I did yesterday morning before traveling to São Sebastião so that in the late afternoon I could present my show to this audience composed of simple people of all ages who came in droves, happy and thinking like me, and also because for many, the reality of life is much more cruel and violent than the coronavirus. I refuse to read, see, and hear the arguments of those who have never revolted or done anything solid to end infinitely larger problems, deeply rooted in our country: dengue epidemics or other mosquito-borne diseases that kill thousands of young and old people every year; murders caused by crime that kill thousands of citizens every year; Road accidents caused by the deplorable state of our roads kill thousands of families every weekend; various epidemics and considerable infant mortality in abandoned neighborhoods with open sewers kill our population confined to this reality for decades by the interests of our monstrous administrations; systematic and repetitive landslides every year during the rainy season kill hundreds and hundreds of people throughout our country; dams that break and kill entire communities in one fell swoop without anyone truly revolting to put an end to all these things. To all those who dare to lecture me, where is your concrete and effective revolt to end these realities that never change? In Brazil, until yesterday, we hadn't even reached 200 cases of infection and we have 0 deaths in a population that is close to 200 million. This reality is insignificant compared to the misery in our country. I'm not buying into this, and the notoriety the public has given me doesn't obligate me to moo in the middle of the herd.
