Azeredo case does not 'involve the party', says Aécio.
The presidential candidate from the PSDB party said that the accusation made by Congressman and former Governor of Minas Gerais, Eduardo Azeredo (PSDB), in the "mensalão tucano" scandal "is not a matter that involves the party"; "It's about respecting the Supreme Court's decision," said Aécio Neves; on Monday, Azeredo was scheduled to give a speech in the Chamber of Deputies refuting the accusations, but canceled, citing "discomfort."
Minas 247 – Senator and presidential candidate Aécio Neves of the PSDB party stated this Tuesday, the 11th, that "no one from the party is involved" with the accusation of involvement of federal deputy Eduardo Azeredo (PSDB-MG) in the "mensalão tucano" case.
"We didn't discuss it because this isn't a matter for the national executive. We'll await the judgment. It's not a matter involving the party. No one from the party is involved in this issue. We must respect the Supreme Court's decision," he said.
The party leadership has ruled out the possibility of a public act of protest against the politician. The Attorney General of the Republic, Rodrigo Janot, has asked the Supreme Court to sentence Azeredo to 22 years in prison for irregularities in his 2008 campaign.
The congressman was scheduled to give a speech today in which he would publicly defend himself against accusations of embezzlement and money laundering made by the Public Prosecutor's Office, but he canceled, citing illness. "I'm not feeling well today. [It's a health] reason," he told reporters as he left the plenary session.
