Mail carriers organize clean-up campaigns in violent neighborhoods.
Due to violence reported in some neighborhoods of Maceió, mail carriers are delivering mail in convoys; in other areas, daily delivery has been suspended due to robberies.
Alagoas247 - The shortage of mail carriers in the state and the violence recorded in some neighborhoods of Maceió have led the Post Office to adopt a new mail delivery system. In addition to the weekend work marathons in the capital and the interior, in some areas of Maceió, workers do not go out alone and need to deliver mail in convoys.
The information was relayed by the deputy director of the Post and Telegraph Company in Alagoas, Luís Carlos da Rocha. According to him, the daily delivery of parcels in some sections of Ponta Grossa and Pitanguinha is suspended due to constant robberies of mail carriers in those areas.
To ensure that letters reach their recipients, the Post Office created a delivery system using groups of mail carriers. This way, these professionals go out in convoys, often on weekends, to make deliveries.
"The mail carriers go out in groups of two or three, never alone. This system was implemented because in these areas, employees were constantly being targeted by criminals. After they started walking in groups, we haven't recorded any more cases of robbery in these regions," he stated.
The shortage of professionals at the Post Office in Alagoas – both in administrative and operational areas – is being assessed so that the figures can be forwarded to the federal government. It is expected that a recruitment process to fill these positions will be held in the second half of this year.
"The shortage of professionals at the Post Office is due to the participation of approximately 50 workers in the Voluntary Dismissal Plan, which occurred last year. Of this total, 14 were mail carriers from Maceió. Other employees are on leave due to INSS (Brazilian Social Security Institute) benefits, and until now, the replacement of this workforce had not yet been carried out," Luís Carlos pointed out.
Recently, 28 mail carriers were hired on a temporary basis and are being trained to go out into the streets to make deliveries. Of these, 24 will be stationed in Maceió. Despite this, the director says that the measure is only palliative and will not be enough to solve the problems currently existing in the state.

Another alternative adopted by the Post Office in Alagoas is the organization of work marathons, which take place in the capital and in the interior, always on Saturdays and Sundays. In addition to involving workers who already perform operational services, they have also included workers from the administrative area.
In the capital, the areas with the largest backlog of undelivered mail are Tabuleiro do Martins and the seafront, which have been the targets of special delivery efforts. In the interior, the situation is also complicated in cities like Porto Real do Colégio, Arapiraca, and Palmeira dos Índios. In Rio Largo, mail delivery was suspended for more than a week due to a robbery at the city's post office.
"The community service drives are always held on Saturdays and Sundays, on the coast and in the upper part of Maceió. We had 15 pieces of mail and 4 packages accumulated, and we made the deliveries over the last two weekends," said the director, emphasizing that other community service drives are being planned to take place in the capital.
