Campos leaves the government. He is a candidate.
The PSB (Brazilian Socialist Party) is out of Dilma's government, and the decision will be announced this Wednesday, when the two ministries occupied by the party will be relinquished: the Ministry of National Integration, headed by Fernando Bezerra Coelho, and the Secretariat of Ports, headed by Leônidas Cristino. "Positions never preceded nor guided the alliance we made more than ten years ago with the political front that is in power. We will not remain in this marketplace of positions. Our relationship with the governments of Lula and Dilma has always been one of selfless support," said Campos in a meeting this Tuesday; he denies that the decision will anticipate the definition of his candidacy for president; however, it is obvious that he is already a candidate.
247 - The PSB will take the most important step towards Eduardo Campos' candidacy for president of the Republic in 2014 this Wednesday (18). On this date, the party will hold a meeting with its main leaders in Brasília to formalize the handover of the positions it holds in the government of President Dilma Rousseff (PT), including those of ministers Fernando Bezerra Coelho (National Integration) and Leônidas Cristino (Secretariat of Ports). Eduardo, in fact, has already communicated the decision to both.
"The positions never preceded nor guided the alliance we made more than ten years ago with the political front that is in power. We are not going to stay in this marketplace of positions. Our relationship with the governments of Lula and Dilma has always been one of selfless support," said Eduardo Campos, according to reports from G1 and Estadão. He preferred to take this position later. Even outside the government, Campos said he will help the government in whatever is necessary.
The leader of the PSB in the Chamber of Deputies, Beto Albuquerque, stated that "the party is embarrassed by the threats being made through newspapers" regarding the pressure the PT is allegedly exerting on President Dilma to reclaim the positions currently held by the PSB. To prevent Dilma from requesting these positions, the PSB will preempt the government and withdraw from the PT administration.
According to journalist Josias de Souza, of all the party leaders present at Tuesday's meeting, only the governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande, defended postponing the resignation. But even he, realizing he had been defeated, sided with the majority. Supporters of the PSB's backing of Dilma's reelection campaign, the brothers Cid and Ciro Gomes from Ceará may oppose the resignation. In that case, they are likely to become isolated and may even be asked to leave the party.
Wednesday's event is the strongest indication yet of Campos's potential candidacy for president, although he denies it. "The decision regarding the succession debate will only take place in 2014. This is a decision made by the party a long time ago and will be honored," he stated. However, without the limitations imposed by his presence in the government bloc, the tendency is for the governor of Pernambuco to position himself even more in opposition to President Dilma's government.
