Chamber admits: security in Pernambuco is "very bad"

The governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, admitted that the public security situation in the state is "very bad"; the head of the state executive believes that the work currently being done is yielding results, despite the increase in the number of homicides, bank and bus robberies, and rapes recorded in Pernambuco; "We have made important arrests (...) Pernambuco 247 - The governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, admitted this Friday (10) that the public security situation in the state is “very bad”. But the head of the state executive believes that the work currently being carried out is yielding results, even with the increase in the number of homicides, rapes, and bank and bus robberies recorded in Pernambuco. “We have made important arrests (...) So we expect to see a decrease in the rate,” he said, who participated in an event at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas.

Câmara spoke about the difficulties he has been facing with the Pact for Life, but did not mention the program's name. "We have a successful policy that has yielded many results while other states were not seeing results. And now we are having difficulties. Difficulties that are being combated with investigation, with intelligence, with action," he added.

Pernambuco recorded 4.479 homicides in 2016, which is 591 more than in 2015, when 3.888 murders were recorded, an increase of 15,2%. This information was released by the press office of the Secretary of Social Defense at the end of last month. Compared to 2013, the best year of the Pact for Life program, with 3.101 homicides, there are 1.378 more deaths, a 44,5% increase in three years.

Between the morning of Thursday (9) and the morning of Friday (10), 14 buses were robbed in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The data is from the police section of Rádio Jornal in partnership with the Bus Drivers' Union. According to statistics, 448 buses were robbed in Pernambuco between January 1st and February 9th. This month, the state has already recorded 103 robberies compared to 75 in the entire month of February 2016.

According to the governor, violence is a national problem that is reflected in the state. "Drug trafficking has unfortunately increased significantly in the country. Drugs enter very easily. Weapons enter very easily. Organized crime increasingly seeks to destabilize institutions," he explains.
