Homicide rate drops 59% in Belo Horizonte.
Belo Horizonte recorded 33 homicides in May, representing a 59,76% decrease compared to the same month in 2014, which had 82 occurrences. This result maintained the trend observed for the city since the beginning of the year, translating into a cumulative decrease of 33,88% from January to May 2015, with 242 recorded homicides, compared to 366 in the first five months of 2014.

This result maintained the trend observed for the city since the beginning of the year, translating into a cumulative decrease of 33,88% from January to May 2015, with 242 reports, compared to 366 in the first five months of 2014.
In the state total, May also ended with a decrease of 20,44%, with 288 occurrences, compared to 362 in the same period last year. Comparing the accumulated figures for the first five months of 2015 and 2014, there was a reduction of 12,3% this year, with 1.680 registered cases, compared to 1.912 from January to May 2014.
In May 2015, compared to the same period last year, there were also significant decreases in the number of homicides in Montes Claros, with 2 compared to 8 (75%), Governador Valadares, 7 to 14 (50%); Ribeirão das Neves, 6 to 10 (40%) and Betim, 12 to 17 (29,4%).
The faster decline in homicides in Belo Horizonte compared to the state average has reduced the city's share of total homicide rates in Minas Gerais. In the accumulated figures for 2015, the capital contributed 14,4%, while in the same period last year, the share was 19,1%.
Among the five cities with the highest contribution, in absolute numbers, to the total number of homicides in the state from January to May 2015, are Betim, with 91 registered homicides and a 5,4% share; Contagem, with 89 homicides and 5,3%; Juiz de Fora, with 53 homicides and 3,2%; and Ribeirão das Neves, with 52 homicides and 3,1%.

From January to May 2015, 36,4% of robberies committed in Minas Gerais occurred in the capital, which had 16.327 incidents. Following the capitals with the highest percentages were Contagem, with 5.162 incidents and 11,5%; Betim, with 2.388 incidents and 5,3%; Uberlândia, with 1.455 incidents and 3,2%; and Uberaba, with 1.252 incidents and 2,8%.
In May, robberies continued to rise both in Belo Horizonte and in the overall state data. In the capital, the increase was almost 11%; in Minas Gerais, 16.7%; and in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region, 17,8%.
Other types of nature
Of the other seven types of violent crimes, five showed a reduction in May 2015 in Minas Gerais, compared to the same month in 2014: attempted homicide (12%), from 397 to 451; completed rape (15,3%), from 111 to 131; attempted rape (10,2%), from 35 to 39; completed rape of a vulnerable person (13,6%), from 171 to 198; kidnapping and false imprisonment (40,6%), from 19 to 32. Completed rapes plus completed rapes of vulnerable persons also decreased by 14,3%, with occurrences falling from 329 to 282 between May 2014 and 2015. Attempted rape of a vulnerable person increased (16,67%), from 21 to 18, and extortion by kidnapping increased (66,7%), from 10 to 6.
In the accumulated period from January to May 2015 compared to the same period in 2014, in addition to completed homicides, seven types of violent crimes showed a decrease in reported cases. These included: attempted homicide (15,3%), with 2.204 cases in 2015 compared to 2.603 last year; completed rape (6,4%), from 596 to 637; attempted rape (14,5%), from 183 to 214; completed rape of a vulnerable person (13,1%), from 912 to 1.050; attempted rape of a vulnerable person (10,3%), from 96 to 107; and extortion by kidnapping (27,1%), from 35 to 48. Kidnapping and false imprisonment (23,7%), 135 to 177. Total rapes, which are completed rapes plus completed rapes of vulnerable individuals, also fell by 13,4%, with occurrences dropping from 1.050 to 912 between January and May of 2014 and 2015.
Among crimes not listed as violent, Minas Gerais experienced a cumulative decrease from January to May 2015 compared to the same period in 2014 in completed extortions (23,7%), from 924 to 1.211, respectively; in completed bodily injuries (11,2%), from 29.033 to 32.699; and in completed thefts (2,6%), from 127.515 to 130.978.
