247 - The Carlos Chagas school was inaugurated last Wednesday (9) in the city of Duque de Caxias, state of Rio de Janeiro, officially becoming the second bilingual Portuguese-Chinese school with Chinese as a compulsory course.

Tian Min, the Consul General of China in Rio de Janeiro, participated in the inauguration ceremony via video and expressed his conviction that the new bilingual school will produce talented students with an understanding of Chinese culture, and that these students will deepen mutual understanding between the Chinese and Brazilian peoples.

"It is believed that the establishment of the school will cultivate more outstanding talents who understand the Chinese language and culture and will make greater contributions to strengthening the friendship between the two peoples," declared Tian Min.

Washington Reis, mayor of Duque de Caxias, attended the ceremony and stated that he believes bilingual schools not only allow students to study Chinese, but also to learn about Chinese history and arts, so that the future of these children will be full of new opportunities arising from this knowledge, reports Xinhua.
