Brazil Agency - Former operations director of the Rio 2016 Games Organizing Committee and former director of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Leonardo Gryner, was released today (14) from the José Frederico Marques Public Prison, in Benfica, in the northern zone of Rio.

Gryner was arrested on Thursday (5), along with the former president of the COB and former president of the Rio 2016 Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, when Operation Unfair Play - Second Half was launched, an offshoot of Unfair Play, which revealed the purchase of votes for the selection of Rio as the 2016 Olympic host city. Nuzman and Gryner allegedly participated in a scheme to pay bribes to members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

According to the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (Seap), Gryner left prison around 8 am. The temporary arrest of the former director was revoked yesterday by Judge Marcelo Bretas, of the 7th Federal Criminal Court of Rio, responsible for the Lava Jato Operation cases in Rio de Janeiro.

Last Monday (9), the judge had extended Gryner's temporary arrest because he understood that he could influence the investigations by preventing the disclosure or delivery of COB materials. But in yesterday's decision, Bretas highlighted that there were no reasons to renew the temporary arrest again for five days, because, among other materials, investigators had access to the email inbox of Nuzman's secretary, Maria Celeste de Lourdes Campos Pedroso.

"Considering that the reasons that led to the extension of the suspect's temporary detention no longer exist, I revoke the temporary detention of Leonardo Gryner," the judge stated.

Regarding Nuzman, his pre-trial detention remains in effect, and the former president will only be released from the Benfica Public Prison if the habeas corpus petition filed by his defense is accepted.
