Bayern loses to Arsenal, but advances
Bayern Munich qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals despite a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in Munich; in the first leg in London, the Germans had won 3-1 and benefited from the away goals rule.
MUNICH, March 13 (Reuters) Bayern Munich qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday despite losing 2-0 to Arsenal in Munich, due to the away goals rule.
Olivier Giroud opened the scoring after 3 minutes, giving hope to the English side after their 3-1 defeat in the first leg last month.
Laurent Koscielny scored with a header 5 minutes from time, making the match tense, but Arsenal couldn't get the third goal that would have given them qualification.
Arsenal's elimination means there will be no English representative in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since the 1995/96 season.
