Bahia has almost 5 cases of tuberculosis per year.

The estimate comes from a survey by the department, which also indicates that for every group of 100 people, 35 have the disease in the state; despite improved social conditions and access to regular food for a larger number of people, the numbers are still considered high in Bahia (5) and in Brazil (70), since the mortality rate is still 7%.

Data from the Ministry of Health reveals that approximately 5 new cases of tuberculosis are registered annually in Bahia. This estimate comes from a study by the ministry, which also indicates that for every 100 people, 35 have the disease in the state.

Even with improved social conditions and access to regular food for a larger number of people, the numbers are still considered high in Bahia (5) and in Brazil (70), since the mortality rate is still 7%.

"We are no longer like we were at the beginning of the 20th century, like the countries with extreme poverty, but there's no way to say that these are negligible rates," says researcher and professor at the Institute of Collective Health at UFBA, Maurício Barreto.

To discuss the prevention and diagnosis of tuberculosis, Brazilian and foreign scientists are participating until this Friday (26) in the 4th Research and Innovation Meeting on Tuberculosis in Bahia, in the Noble Hall of the Rectory of the Federal University of Bahia, in Salvador.
