Brasilia – The renegotiation of debts for family and business farmers in the semi-arid states of Brazil ended the year with R$ 1,3 billion in debts settled and 114,9 renegotiated transactions.

Bahia was responsible for the largest share of this volume, with R$ 250 million renegotiated. Piauí came in second with R$ 217 million, followed by Minas Gerais with R$ 211 million. The data was released by the Ministry of National Integration.

The renegotiation referred to in the report was established by Law No. 12.844/2013, specifically to help farmers affected by the drought. This opportunity is valid for debts incurred up to December 2006.

Last Monday (30), the National Monetary Council (CMN) also approved special renegotiation conditions for rural producers in the North, Northeast and Midwest who want to settle debts incurred up to 2010.

In addition to the possibility of settling debts, the government has established emergency credit lines since May 2012 to assist the population affected by the drought. The deadline for contracting these loans ended on December 30, 2013. For now, there has been no extension.
